A modern fictional story inspired by "Esther" in Esther 4-7
The warm sun was softly shining through the tinted office windows. People were talking on the phone, some were discussing with each other, and a few disappeared to the coffee room. Yes, a typical day at Halcyon Systems, a large logistics and technology company.
Upstairs in the executive offices was the office of Elena Marlowe, the Chief Strategy Officer for the company. She was intelligent, controlled, direct, and respected throughout the company. She had earned her place in a male-dominated executive structure and rarely backed away from conflict.

She had to prepare for tomorrow's meeting. -- Image created by ChatGPT imaging.
She was reviewing stat sheets in the morning. Her phone rang.
Not the office phone, her personal cell phone.
She looked at the caller ID and felt it was odd that a manager was calling on her private line during work hours. But the person calling was also a longtime friend, Alice Wharton.
Elena answered, "Hello." There was a touch of a questioning feel to her hello.
Alice sounded very upset and frantic about something. All she said to Elena was, "We need to meet, but not here. This is critically important and needs to be very private. How about our favorite place we go to each month?"
While Elena instinctively wanted to ask Alice what was going on, she felt her fear and replied, "How about 8 tonight?"
Alice simply said, "Yes" and hung up.
Elena put her phone on the desk, still looking at it with a perplexed look when Martin walked in. He started, "Elena, is the… Are you OK?"
"Yes, just got a disturbing call from an old friend. A personal issue I can deal with later. What's up?"
"Oh, sorry to hear that. I just want to remind you of the major board meeting tomorrow."
"Thanks, Martin, it is on my calendar."
With that, Martin left.
The call from Alice lay heavy on her mind. What could cause Alice to be so upset? She thought one way was to talk to Alice's director. But not wanting to tip her hand, she called all the directors, one at a time, to her office. She explained that she was simply doing a check to see how things are in all divisions.
When Alice's director came in, she repeated the same question she was asking everyone, "I'm simply doing a check to see how things are in all divisions. How is the operation going in your division?"
He simply replied, "Everything is in great working order. The strategies you dictated are working wonderfully."
She thanked him and called the next division director to come up.
Knowing the major board meeting was tomorrow afternoon, she opened up the acquisition prospectus on acquiring Northline Freight Technologies. It was important to know what the offer said.
While deeply engrossed in the document, Victor Hale stomped into her office, startling her. He was the founder and board chairman of Halcyon Systems and ruled the company with an iron fist. The only person in the universe who made a confident Elena nervous.
His voice naturally boomed, "Are you ready for tomorrow?"
"Yes, I'm reviewing the documents in detail right now."
"Good. Remember, when we complete the acquisition, we will be streamlining the company. Many employees will be laid off. This needs to be completely up front and on the table. They are on board with this. Do we have your support?"
"While I'm not happy about people getting laid off, I do understand the streamlining for efficiency. So, yes, I'm on board."
With that, he left, closing her office door hard.
She spent the rest of the day studying the acquisition. She had lost track of time and realized she needed to hustle to get to her rendezvous with Alice.
She walked into the restaurant and immediately spotted Alice. As she sat down, she could tell Alice was still frazzled. Alice was the IT manager for the entire company. She had access to all data and programs.
Elena started, "OK, we are alone now. What is going on?"
Alice returned, "I stumbled upon something that I was not supposed to see. It was a document written by the Executive Vice President, Martin Voss. Normally, I wouldn't risk my job to read something not meant for me, but the title was scary. I read it." She paused.
Elena had the Chief Strategy Officer look of how dare you read something that is way above your pay grade, when Alice continued, "Now, I can't get it out of my mind. You seriously need to read this."
Alice pulled out of her briefcase a white business envelope that was well stuffed, and reached out to give it to her friend.
Elena, at first, refused to take it. But the fear, the tears, and Alice's trembling hands changed her mind. She took it.
Alice grabbed her belongings and hurriedly left.
The waiter approached the table; Elena waved him off, and she went home.
At home, Elena poured a glass of wine and stared at the envelope. She was questioning herself whether to read it or not.
Her mind was bouncing around all the negative things that could happen if she was caught with this document. In her worst-case scenario, she would be fired.
Another sip of wine, remembering the look Alice had, she said to herself, "screw it" and opened the envelope.
The title got her livid: "The Planned Removal of Individuals at Northline Freight Technologies"
As she read, anger reared its ugly head, something that Elena kept in complete control. But not tonight.
The document was written by Martin Voss, the same Martin who gave her a brief visit earlier in the day. He was Victor's longtime advisor.
This document was addressed directly to Victor Hale. But it was not about laying off people for efficiency. It was to convince Victor that employees from Northline Freight Technologies were resisting integration, weakening morale, and threatening the future of Halcyon Systems. Many of these employees were convinced that this merger was the worst thing that could happen. They were attempting to stop it.
The last section was the part that sent Elena into a tirade. It explained that they needed to remove specific people under the guise of layoffs. It named names.
It was very convincing.
She also knew the document was a complete lie.
Martin held a substantial amount of Halcyon stock and had a personal financial stake in the success of the acquisition. He feared continued resistance from several influential Northline employees could damage confidence in the deal and lower the value of his holdings. His solution was simple: remove the resistance under the cover of layoffs.
Halcyon Systems had a detailed file on the professional side of Elena, but had nothing in her personal life.
Elena was very familiar with Northline Freight Technologies and their employees. Her dad had worked there for years. She knew many employees within the company.
While it was in her professional file, not too many people even knew she started her career at Northline Freight Technologies. She never mentioned her past work history to people she worked with. It wasn't important to her current job.
She had worked her way up into mid-management. She got to a point where she was technically her dad's boss. That did not sit well with her, and she moved on to another company.
Another glass of wine was poured.
She was now more conflicted than ever.
Thoughts of resigning had entered her mind. Having a confrontation with the only person in the universe that scared her did not sit well. Her angry, smart mind said - wait a minute!
She yelled into the large empty house, "I WILL NOT LET THIS HAPPEN!"
She didn't take another sip of wine; it was a big gulp of wine.
Elena grabbed her phone, went to the contact list, and started calling everyone she knew. Everyone that worked at Northline Freight Technologies, that is.
None of the employees she contacted were told of the real reason she called. She told them she was preparing a strategic platform for growth to show at the next major acquisition meeting.
She noted which of her contacts were on the hit list. She asked them for their thoughts, their fears, and any document that would validate those fears and thoughts. She told them it would help her create a better strategy platform.
She did get resistance from several contacts. They were very fearful of being caught.
She gathered every bit of evidence that she could get that would nullify that terrible document.
There was one problem… facing Victor.
Even though it was getting very late at night, Elena called Alice. She told Alice, "Thanks for that information. The rebuttal is ready." She paused, then continued, "I'll probably get fired tomorrow morning, but this has to be said. Either way, let's do lunch this Saturday; I'm buying."
Alice agreed.
It was a restless night for Elena. Her mind was racing at the speed of light.
Elena got to the office way earlier than usual. She was pacing back and forth in her office like a caged cat.
The administrative assistant arrived right on time as usual. Elena took a breath, then approached. "I need to have a private discussion with Victor and Martin before the major acquisition meeting this afternoon. It is extremely important."
She looked at the computer screen for a moment, then replied, "The only time they are both available is at 8:30 this morning."
"That time is perfect; put it down for Victor's office."
This was the longest 30 minutes of her lifetime.
She was ready. There were three copies of her proposal on the strategic plan not to lay off anyone. It included copies of her supporting documents.
As she entered his office, Victor, with that natural booming voice, said, "This had better be the most important moment of your life! Not a good time for chatting."
She looked directly at him. "The Northline acquisition is about to fail. That seems important to me."
She stopped talking and sat down. The silence was deafening.
Victor retorted, "What in the world are you talking about?"
She looked at Victor in a way Victor had never seen. "At great risk of losing my job, there is something you two need to be aware of. There is a private document between Martin and you. That document is not private anymore. If Northline Freight Technologies sees this document, the merger will fail, and, quite possibly, a lawsuit will happen. I don't know how it got loose. What I have handed you is a new proposal. Instead of streamlining, I have demonstrated how we can keep everyone and still be profitable."
Martin's face expressed extreme anger and worry at the same time. He stood up and spoke loudly, "How dare this woman come in here with an extremely confidential document strictly addressed to you. I want her terminated now!"
Victor looked directly at Martin, "Sit down, Martin! Let me review all of this first. Then I'll decide how this will be handled."
Victor's face expressed his anger as he looked at Elena, "Have you read that document?"
"Yes, I have, and it's a complete lie. Read the supporting documents, and you will understand."
Victor, his anger fully expressed in his face, looked at Elena dead in the eyes, "Get out of my office now, go to your office, and wait for me!"
Elena got up, stood tall, and walked out.
He looked at Martin as Elena left, "Shut up, not a word out of your mouth!"
He called his administrative assistant and said, "Let me know if Elena went directly to her office."
A few moments later, he got the call that Elena did as told.
He looked at Martin, "Go directly to your office and wait for me. Do not talk to anyone."
After Martin left, he personally called every executive scheduled for this afternoon's acquisition meeting and rescheduled it for the next day.
Elena was pacing in her office, nearly in tears, and feeling like her time here had come to an end. She kept telling herself this needed to be said, regardless of the outcome.
After Victor read all the documents, he sat there in total disbelief. His anger had become a bit more manageable. He got up and headed to Elena's office.
In typical Victor fashion, he burst into Elena's office, startling her. He looked at her, "Sit down!"
She sat down; her hands were trembling, and Victor continued, "I don't know what to do with you. On one hand, you should be terminated for breach of your contract, but on the other hand, you may have saved the merger. That was either bold courage or professional suicide. I have not decided which. We are having an upper management meeting at 3 pm sharp. Be there."
With that, he walked out, closing the door hard behind him.
That afternoon, Elena showed up at the management meeting a few minutes early. She poured a cup of coffee and sat down.
Victor's administrative assistant placed copies of her documents on the desks where everyone was sitting. While thumbing through the stack, she had a small panic attack; Martin's letter to Victor was included.
Victor came in. The first thing he mentioned was that Martin would not be attending the meeting.
For the next two hours, they went back and forth about each item and the best way to do it. They had reached an agreement on the addendum to the acquisition.
Victor asked for silence. Then stated, "This next item does not leave this room. Anyone who is caught talking about this beyond this room will be fired immediately. Is this understood? Either sign the NDA or leave now."
Everyone signed.
He read the document from Martin out loud. Then stated, "This is a complete lie. I will deal with Martin after this meeting. I want all of you to know that getting caught in a lie can lead to termination and possible other legal actions."
"One last item before we adjourn. Elena took a bold step — courage under fire, if you will. I have gone over this again and again, and I have reached a decision."
He looked directly at Elena.
"Whether you remain with this company will depend on how you handle one additional responsibility. You will lead the Northline Transition Team."
As he dismissed the meeting, Elena finally let out the breath she had been holding. She still had a job—for now—and had inherited a problem she had not planned on: heading up the Transition Team for Northline Freight Technologies.
It might be more work, but she wore that badge proudly.
Somewhere out in the town, Martin found himself with a lot more time on his hands and a couple of boxes of personal stuff.
